These particular runes are a writing system used in ancient Scandinavia. They were easy to carve on stone or wood, due to their straight lines. Meanings are assigned to each rune even beyond the letter's sound, which makes them very popular in Artifice and other spellcasting where a written symbol is needed to hold magical power.
These particular runes were used among many northern folk for magic, and are popular modernly for divination.
